Flowers in San Lee Park

As we begin to be teased with the approach of warmer Spring days, many of us eagerly anticipate venturing outside. Whether it’s gardening, outdoor exercise, visiting the park, or grilling outdoors, there’s a lot to look forward to in spring, especially in Lee County! We are fortunate to have outdoor amenities designed and maintained by our County and City departments. Adding to our spring fever are events and annual warm weather attractions that draw us out into the community and bring visitors into our local businesses. Sanford’s Tourism Development Authority does an exceptional job of marketing Sanford to tourists and business travelers, with events throughout the year for visitors and locals to enjoy. Whether you’re looking for an egg hunt this month, a great concert over the summer, or to attend the next Holiday Night Market, visit visitsanfordnc.com and downtownsanford.com to learn more! Downtown Sanford gains events and excitement each year with the work of Downtown Sanford Inc. Sanford is a “Main Street America” accredited downtown. Working with Jonesboro and Broadway as well, DSI promotes the unique assets of our “main streets”. Sanford Area Growth Alliance works closely with the TDA and DSI to understand the economic impacts of our local industries, small businesses, workforce commuting, and area events on development and growth.

With spring kicking off this month, the community and visitors eagerly anticipate the Sanford Farmers’ Market opening downtown on April 20th from 8:30 am to 12 pm. Managed by the Lee County Agricultural Extension and supported by the City of Sanford, the Farmers’ Market attracts an average of 792 people each Saturday. The Farmers’ Market has provided many small farms in the area and other product entrepreneurs with the ability to connect with a larger customer base and expand their dreams. Encouraging and promoting the entrepreneurial spirit are critical to any community’s development and complement the unique offerings that support our overall economy. The return to the community is directly echoed in the new Farmers’ Market coming soon to a permanent home downtown, thanks to Pilgrims Sanford. Pilgrims’ investment in the community through their Hometown Strong program will provide $515,000 to the Sanford Agricultural Marketplace. Pilgrims is one of Lee County’s largest employers, and this generous investment has contributed to the local economy and the hometown of many of their employees. The facility will bring new opportunities for Lee County residents. Local involvement and support by responsible businesses are what make a healthy and successful community.

So, welcome spring and the excitement it brings to our area. Take advantage of the opportunities provided by public and private organizations, realizing the connectivity of it all to the economic decisions made every day. Thank our county and city employees who work around the clock to clean and care for the amenities we have and may take for granted. The level of maintenance and planning that goes into your own yard should bring great appreciation for the never-ending tasks public workers face when it comes to caring for our parks and other public areas. Most importantly, remember to set your clocks back so you are ready to spring into Lee County’s warm weather opportunities!
