Decades of Innovation and Community Impact

In 1971, one of Sanford’s longest-standing manufacturers was established in Lee County. Coty Inc. has been a fixture in the community and a landmark along the corridor leading to the town of Broadway. The decision to build a manufacturing facility in Sanford was transformative for the community, providing employment for thousands of residents and people from the surrounding region over the years. Many families settled in Sanford, North Carolina, because of spouses and parents finding jobs with the cosmetics giant.

François Coty, the company’s founder, was born in France. Tragically, his mother passed away when he was three years old, and his father disappeared from his life. Raised by his grandparents, Coty went on to serve in the military and his later work in a local pharmacy sparked his interest in perfume. In 1903, he achieved success with the creation of a new perfume, La Rose Jacqueminot, made from two synthetic ingredients he acquired from a bankrupt essential oil business. By 1905, Coty’s perfumes were being exported to the United States, and by 1912, retail locations had opened in major cities, including New York. Coty Inc. was formally established in 1922 and added a U.S.-based laboratory and assembly plant in New York to reduce alcohol duties and maintain competitive pricing. Over the years, Coty Inc. expanded rapidly, acquiring several companies and becoming known for its innovative makeup and body care products.

Coty has a rich history of innovation and resilience, maintaining its position as a powerhouse brand in the cosmetics and beauty industry. As the Sanford Area Growth Alliance (SAGA) works to grow the economy and expand opportunities in Sanford and Lee County, we continually draw upon the expertise, history, and diversity of our manufacturing sector. From automotive to textiles, advanced manufacturing, and life sciences, Lee County is fortunate to host a wide range of industries, including household names like Coty. The company remains a standout topic in SAGA’s recruitment and retention efforts.

Coty produces many globally recognized brands, including Adidas, Lancaster, Gucci, and Burberry. Over the years, Coty has partnered with numerous celebrities, such as Katy Perry, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Jennifer Lopez, and Beyoncé, whose product lines were once made in Sanford. While the company has moved away from some celebrity brands, Kylie Cosmetics by Kylie Jenner remains part of its Sanford portfolio. Additionally, Philosophy, a renowned skincare line, continues to be a cornerstone of the Sanford facility’s production. Sally Hansen, one of the most prominent names in nail care, is also bottled right here in Sanford.

Coty remains one of the largest employers in Lee County, encompassing both a manufacturing plant and a distribution center. During a recent tour, SAGA observed firsthand the strides the company has made in continuous improvement and efficiency. Safety is a top priority on-site, and many of the enhancements implemented at the facility are the first seen among our local employers. SAGA is committed to collaborating with Coty to share best practices across industries.

The Sanford site continues to expand its portfolio and seeks innovative ways to foster growth. Leadership at Coty Sanford is not just planning for the years ahead but for decades, ensuring continued success for the company while creating opportunities for the community and the region.
