Chamber Chat - Lee County Government Public Policy Luncheon

Feb 04

By Meg Moss

Tomorrow, the Sanford Area Growth Alliance (SAGA) will hold their monthly Public Policy Luncheon – a series designed to create opportunities for SAGA members and the public to learn more about public policy topics impacting our local community.  This month, Lee County Board of Commissioners Chair Amy Dalrymple and County Manager John Crumpton will provide a presentation on the State of the County. Thank you to the folks at the Lee County Government Office for providing the information for this article.

Lee County Government (LCG) produces the annual State of the County report that highlights the major accomplishments of the year; provides a look at the annual operating budget and capital improvement plan; and offers a glimpse at upcoming LCG initiatives and projects.  Steady growth and development – both business and residential – continue to drive key initiatives and factor heavily in the future plans of the organization.

Education remains a top priority for LCG, as reflected in past and present decisions related to both the Annual Operating Budget and Capital Improvement Plan.  The report provides an update on the investments made at Central Carolina Community College, including the new Emergency Services Training Building that opened in January; as well as an update on the construction of the county’s first PK-5 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) school – W.B. Wicker Elementary, which is scheduled to open in Fall 2019.  The investments in both the K-12 and community college education systems are indicative of their importance to the Lee County community both in educating our youth and as an economic development driver.

The report also includes information about Plan SanLee that will act as a long-range comprehensive planning tool that will help guide future growth and development in Lee County.  The Plan centers on three main development themes: balanced growth, compact land use pattern, and livable community design standards.  This has been a joint effort between Lee County Government and the City of Sanford and includes feedback gathered in public meetings, focus groups and stakeholder surveys.

Attendees at Monday’s luncheon may also look forward to updates related to LCG Parks & Recreation including the opening of the new SanLee Nature Center.  The presentation will also cover progress on the LCG parks master planning process that currently plans to consider improvements at Horton Park, Temple Park, OT Sloan Park and Kiwanis Children’s Park.

Partnerships are also a large part of the work at LCG.  One of which is the partnership at SAGA that works to support and promote the economic growth and vitality of Lee County.  Partnerships will also factor heavily and be crucial to the success of ongoing efforts to confront and combat the growing opioid crisis afflicting our communities both here locally, around the state and across the nation.

The State of the County presentation will be full of important information regarding the Lee County community.  The Public Policy Luncheon also provides attendees with the opportunity to speak with presenters to ask questions and share feedback, as well as an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas with other key community and business leaders in attendance.  For those who have registered to attend - we look forward to seeing you there!
