Chamber Chat - Streetfest and Fireworks

Apr 08

By Meg Moss

It’s so exciting to see all the activity going on in Sanford. Legacy rockers Southern Culture on the Skids will bring their signature sound to downtown Sanford on April 14th for the second annual Downtown Sanford StreetFest & Fireworks, a day-long celebration of downtown’s revitalization.

The City of Sanford, Downtown Sanford, Inc., the Sanford Area Growth Alliance, title sponsor Industrial Construction Experts, and local businesses and nonprofits will offer music, food trucks, demonstrations, yoga, and so much more. The evening will be capped off with fireworks.

Downtown streets will close early that morning for The Salvation Army’s Kettle Krush 5K Fun Run. It’s not too late to register yourself, or your whole family, at The traditional 5K will be followed by a Fun Run for the kids. Steele, Carthage, Moore, and Wicker streets will then remain closed all day.

Local favorites Tuesday Night Music Club will take the main stage to open the festival, followed by Whisky Revival and The B-Sides, and will close out the evening with Southern Culture on the Skids, who will start their set at 7:00 pm. The main stage will be located at the corner of Wicker and Steele Streets.

There will be a second stage to showcase local talent including Diali Cissokho, Nakia Latrelle, the Temple Teens, the Lee County High School Show Choir and Ravenne Escobar. This stage will be located at the corner of Carthage Street and Moore Street.

The StreetFest is family friendly. At 2:00 pm, the Central Carolina Community College basketball team will come out to shoot hoops with the kids on Carthage Street, and basketballs will be available at the festival thanks to the Upward Basketball program. Feel free to bring your own ball as well.

Food trucks will be set up around downtown for lunch and dinner, including Bull City Street Food, NC Wings & Things, Bold Flavors, Hibachi Xpress, Tacos El Primo, Healthy Grill on Wheels, Sandwich Mike’s, The Dream Cream, and Kona Ice.

The festival’s Fun Zone opens at 3:00 p.m. on Carthage Street complete with a game truck, inflatables, and face painting. Several demonstrations are scheduled throughout the day, including a martial arts demonstration by Black Belt Leadership Academy, a salsa dancing demonstration by Sanford Latin Dance, shag dancing, and a Tai Chi demonstration. There will also be kid-friendly activities at many of the vendor booths.

Adults and teens who want to enter the cornhole tournament, slated to start at 1:30 pm, can stop by the Smoke and Barrel anytime to register for $10 per team.

As the live music winds down, head to Depot Park for a dance party complete with Face 2 Face by Tiffany Vale, the Roasted & Toasted truck, snacks, and Coke beverages while we wait for fireworks to decorate the sky over downtown.
