Chamber Chat: Leadership Sanford 2018

This past Thursday, June 14th, the Sanford Area Growth Alliance-Chamber of Commerce celebrated the graduation of the 2017-2018 Leadership Sanford class.

 

Do you have an employee in your organization who stands out with exceptional leadership qualities? Does he or she have the potential to take on more of a leadership role in the community? If so, we want to encourage your employee to apply for Leadership Sanford!
 

Our participants get an opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of local issues, enhance their leadership skills, and explore opportunities to get more involved with the community. They build strong connections and lasting relationships with fellow class members.
 

Here’s how it works:

  • The nine-month program includes monthly sessions (the class meets one full day per month for nine months) that will introduce them to issues and challenges facing the community along with a two-day retreat.
  • State and local leaders will meet with the participants, providing information on the history of Sanford-Lee County, education, healthcare, law enforcement, local economic development, local/state government, non-profits and community involvement.
  • Topics are designed to provide both personal and professional development, and community enrichment.
  • Applicants must show potential for, or demonstrate leadership abilities, community interest and involvement, and the desire to assume expanded leadership responsibility.

This is an elite program of the Sanford Area Growth Alliance – Chamber of Commerce. The program is limited to 20 participants, and is open to business men and women who have demonstrated leadership aptitude and who represent a cross section of interested, motivated, and concerned citizens.

 

This past year, some of the topics, presentations and tours included the history of Lee County, economic development in Lee County, business etiquette, a tour of the Raleigh Executive Jetport in Lee County, an overview of the offerings at Central Carolina Community College, and a visit to the Legislative Offices in Raleigh. We also participated in a team building activity at the Gross Farms Corn Maze, and learned more about our individual personality types by taking the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. This helped us learn how to best work with other personality types, bettering our ability to be a good leader.

 

Our hope is that throughout the course, we challenge graduates of the program to serve as volunteers on appointed and elected boards, participate in community work, and offer their services in government and non-profit organizations. Lasting friendships are made throughout the year, and our goal is that these friendships lead to business and community partnerships that will be beneficial to all concerned.

 

Graduation took place over lunch at Carolina Trace where we had a slide show of photographs from throughout the nine months, we shared memories and favorite presentations from throughout the program, and participants were awarded with graduation certificates.
