Chamber Chat - Downtown StreetFest and Fireworks

Apr 16

By Meg Moss

The Downtown Streetfest and Fireworks is coming soon! In just less than a week, on Saturday, April 22nd, the streets of downtown will be filled with activity.

According to a press release from the City of Sanford, the community is invited to downtown Sanford on April 22nd  for the Downtown StreetFest & Fireworks, a day-long celebration of the completed streetscape revitalization, a project totaling $6.5 million in public investment.

The City of Sanford, Downtown Sanford, Inc. (DSI), the Sanford Area Growth Alliance (SAGA), as well as local nonprofits and businesses will offer music, food trucks, demonstrations, live street entertainers, and more. The evening will be capped off with fireworks.

Those looking for fun daytime activities will find plenty to do in downtown Sanford. The first annual “Art in the Alley” will begin at 10 a.m. and will feature local artists, demos, and activities on Charlie Watson Lane. Merchants will offer specials and discounts.

There will be activities in Depot Park from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. as well, including Yoga in the Park with the YMCA and a cornhole tournament hosted by The Smoke & Barrel. Yoga will be free and starts at 2 pm with a 30-minute family session followed by a 60-minute adult session starting at 3:00. No equipment needed – just bring yourself and a child if you intend to participate in the kid session. Entry for the cornhole tournament is $10 per team. There is a Streetfest Cornhole Tournament facebook event page with all the details.

The StreetFest itself will begin at 4:45 p.m. with a street party on Steele Street, led by Sanford Latin Dance. Steele, Carthage, Moore, and Wicker streets will be closed the remainder of the evening. Some good parking areas are First Presbyterian church, the Public Library, or the City public parking lots.

The B Sides band will start the evening with honky tonk and country music on the corner of Wicker and Steele Street starting at 4:45 p.m., followed by rockabilly group The Straight 8s at 6:15 p.m. Food trucks will be set up around downtown, including NC Wings & Things, Bold Flavors, Bac 2 Mac, Bull City, and Kona Ice.

The StreetFest is a family friendly event. There will be a Kids Zone on Carthage Street across from Temple Theater complete with games and face painting; the Sanford Police Department’s mobile unit, bounce houses, a ring toss, and more. A martial arts demonstration by Black Belt Leadership Academy will begin at 5:45 p.m., just outside Temple Theater. There will be kid-friendly activities throughout downtown all evening.

The driving force for the event was Sanford City Council & DSI wanting to celebrate the completion of the streetscape project. The concept was to provide a downtown event to bring lots of folks to see the beautification that has taken place over the past year and a half. The main event is the fireworks that will cap off the evening, and plan to start at 8:30 pm. The fireworks will be accompanied by the Lee County Community Orchestra. We encourage folks to bring chairs and blankets to enjoy both the bands throughout the evening, and the orchestra and fireworks.

This event has been a team project, with a planning committee made up of various Sanford-Lee County employees and citizens. Key committee members have been: Kelly Miller, City of Sanford Public Information Officer; Jennifer St. Clair, Downtown Sanford Inc. Executive Director; Meg Moss, Sanford Area Growth Alliance Chamber of Commerce Executive Director; Tim Shaw, City of Sanford General Services Manager; Fedd Walker, Facilities and Beautification Administrator for the City; Paul Weeks, City Engineer; Major Jamie Thomas, Sanford Police Department; Ken Cotton, Deputy Fire Chief; Kris Furmage, City Transportation Administrator; Daniel Simmons, Boys and Girls Club CEO; April Montgomery, owner of REAP; Hannah Hepler, owner of The Cabana Salon; and Jeff Towson, Smoke & Barrel owner.
