Chamber Chat - Anchors Aweigh

Mar 12

The Sanford Area Growth Alliance is a promoting sponsor for Anchors Aweigh – a benefit auction fundraiser for the Coalition for Families in Lee County (Coalition) and the Lee County Partnership for Children (LCPFC) on Friday March 31st at 5:30pm at the Dennis A. Wicker Center.

Literacy is a common goal of both the Coalition and the LCPFC. Together, these organizations have explored various options to raise funds to support early literacy and education for young children so that they will be prepared for school success and later life endeavors. As a result, these organizations are hosting Anchors Aweigh, a benefit auction, to enhance their efforts in raising funds to support their missions. There will be an auction, a variety of games and activities, and entertainment - all focused on fundraising on a goal - early literacy and learning, and kindergarten readiness.

LCPFC is a 501(c) 3 organization charged with administering two state-funded programs in Lee County, Smart Start and NC Pre-K. Smart Start, North Carolina’s nationally recognized public-private initiative, was created in 1993 with a mission to ensure that every child in the state arrives at school healthy and ready to succeed.  The LCPFC’s mission is to ensure that all children, regardless of family income, are healthy and ready to enter kindergarten. This includes programs in areas of health, literacy, family support and early care and education.

NC Pre-K is a community-based preschool program designed to provide 4-year-old children, who may not otherwise be served, with a valuable educational experience prior to entering kindergarten. LCPFC also administers the Lee County Imagination Library, a literacy program that provides free books to Lee County children under the age of five; and the Reach out and Read program which is a partnership with Sanford Pediatrics. Through this partnership children are given a book at each well child visit through their 5th birthday.

The Coalition is a non-profit organization whose efforts are centered to empower and encourage individuals and families to reach their potential by improving and enriching their quality of life. It was established in 1991 as a not-for-profit organization, made up of county leaders and concerned citizens. Priority areas of concentration are the prevention of teen pregnancy, the reduction of infant mortality, as well as parental and family support.

Parents as Teachers is one program administered by the Coalition - a home visitation program for families with children ages birth to three. Parent educators share child development information from the national curriculum, Parent as Teachers. The focus of this program is to prepare children for Kindergarten and provide parental support.

One of the other programs provided by the Coalition is a teen pregnancy prevention program called TOP, which is held during and after school that provides information on self-esteem, good decision making skills, and sexual health and education. Just this past year, the TOP program added on another group; the English as a Second Language TOP group.

According to the North Carolina SHIFT (Sexual Health Initiatives for Teens) program, Lee County had seventy-six teen pregnancies in 2015. The good news is that this statistic is down 48.8% since 2010.

For more information on how to benefit from these programs, you can visit leecountypfc.org for the Partnership, or coalitionforfamilies.org for the Coalition. We hope to see you at Anchors Aweigh on March 31st at the Civic Center! Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased at either the Coalition or LCPFC offices.
